Alex Kouvatas: The story so far

Magic has always been more than tricks for me — it’s been a way to connect, explore, and tell stories. This page is a look back at the journey so far: the places I’ve performed, the people I’ve met, and the moments that have shaped the magician I’ve become.

Experiences

The Documentary

I once became the main subject of a documentary that followed my journey as a magician. It captured the highs and lows of performing the long hours of practice, the thrill of the stage, and the moments of doubt in between. It was a very interesting experience, having cameras so close while I was working it was a bit daunting, but it reminded me why I do what I do: to share something of me, something real, even when it’s hidden behind illusions.

Years of Magic
1

I’ve been performing magic for 14 years now, and I still can’t quite believe it. From making three-year-olds giggle to leaving ninety-five-year-olds in awe, I’ve had the privilege of performing for people of all ages and walks of life. Everyone, no matter how old, seems to fall under the spell of the illusions our brains love to play with. I feel blessed to have been doing this for so long  and I hope to triple that number!

Sharing the Stage with Jim Smith

One of the most surreal moments in my career was meeting the brilliant stand-up comedian Jim Smith  and being invited to perform in his special. He’s an absolute gem of a human being, hilarious on and off stage, and I’ll always be grateful that he asked me to share that spotlight with him. What a night!

The Burlesque Connection

Did you know I also perform in burlesque shows? I don’t do burlesque myself — let’s not give anyone nightmares — but I’ve had the joy of performing magic alongside some of the biggest names in the burlesque scene. The cabaret world is full of energy, laughter, and artistry, and I adore being part of it. There’s something magical about a night that blends comedy, dance, singing, and illusion all in one go.

87 Shows in 22 Days

This past Fringe, I performed 87 shows in just 22 days. If you ever wonder how much I love performing, the answer is simply yes. There’s a strange kind of peace I find on stage — connecting with people in that fleeting, electric way. It’s exhausting, exhilarating, and utterly fulfilling. Audiences seemed to have fun, and honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

One of the most memorable journeys I’ve taken with magic was to the Isle of Lewis. Performing there felt like stepping into another world  wild landscapes, warm people, and a deep sense of connection. There’s something special about bringing magic to a place so remote and beautiful; it reminded me that wonder doesn’t need a big stage  it only needs open hearts and curious minds.

Becoming a member of the Edinburgh Magic Circle has been a real honour. It’s an incredible group of magicians who perform at the highest level, and being part of that community means a lot to me. I’d wanted to join for years, so when I finally did, it felt like a dream realised. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by people who are just as obsessed with magic as I am.
